Eugene Area Radio Stations Awards Scholarships

Eugene Area Radio Stations – EARS – a non-profit trade association comprised of 16 Eugene area radio stations recently awarded $10,000 in scholarships to students in Oregon. Its goal is to support students pursuing a radio career through post-secondary education.

Five (5) students were selected by EARS to receive 2024-2025 academic year scholarships, because of the student’s strong academic qualifications, current/past work at student run radio stations, community service, and their interests in a professional radio career.

The EARS scholarship program selects one graduating high school student and one college undergraduate student, to each receive $3,000 scholarships. Because of the strong field of applicants, EARS also selected three additional candidates to receive $1,000 and $1,500 scholarships.

These EARS Scholarship Awardees include Joaquin Arriola, Avery Walkoviak, Holden Eastman, Piper Such, and Sadie Tresnit.

$3,000 College Undergraduate Scholarship: Joaquin Arriola, graduate from Academy of Arts and Academics High School in Springfield; and currently is enrolled as a senior at the University of Oregon this Fall. Arriola is pursuing a career in cinema studies at the UO and produces Sunday Live Sessions at KWVA Eugene 88.1 FM. He is an Audio Production/Broadcasting Engineer and Audio Post-Mixing. He has interned at Marmoset music, works in his own independent audio production business, and became a Certified Radio Operator through the Society of Broadcast Engineers. Arriola has 5+ years of experience working as Production Director and scheduling coordinator at KWVA-FM Eugene, U of O's student-run, commercial-free radio station.

$3,000 High School Graduate Scholarship: Avery Walkoviak, graduate from Marist Catholic High School. Avery is attending the St. Bonaventure University in New York this Fall to pursue studies in Strategic Communications and Social Justice and Advocacy Communications. Walkoviak was a KRVM Student Broadcaster, June 2022- August 2023. Her podcast for Sources of Strength won the state-wide Peer Leadership Award. Help fundraise for community radio station, helped host a radio shows, and was a regular voice on the station that announced music and community ads. Active in Honors Society, softball, community service, and after-school work, Walkoviak will be a valuable asset to the broadcasting industry.

$1,500 College Undergraduate Scholarship: Holden Eastman, graduate from Sheldon High School in Eugene. Eastman has completed two years at Lane Community College.  He is transferring to UO to pursue a Masters in Community and Regional Planning. Eastman started as a Student Worker at Sheldon, student-run radio station, 91.9 KRVM-FM.  This position later transitioned to a substitute worker, and he is still working this as he progresses through college. In this position, He records voice tracks and edits radio shows.

$1,500 High School Graduate Scholarship: Piper Such, graduate from Sheldon High School. Such is planning to attend the University of Oregon this Fall to pursue studies in Radio Broadcast Production. Such was a KRVM Student Broadcaster participating in program prep and on-air hosting. She was a counselor at Camp Harlow during the summer and Sheldon Wrestling Team manager. Since childhood, she has been active in voice and video family productions, leading up to student broadcaster in her junior year.

$1,000 College Undergraduate Scholarship: Sadie Tresnit, graduate from Franklin High School in Portland. Tresnit is planning to be a senior at the University of Oregon this Fall to pursue a journalism teaching career. Tresnit was a volunteer Student DJ at the UO campus, student-run radio station, KWVA-FM.  She produced a weekly two-hour, new music program. In addition to her radio duties, she is a columnist for the UO Emerald newspaper, winning the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association award for best collegiate opinion column.

Total investment by the Eugene Area Radio Stations in the EARS 2024 Scholarship program is $10,000 in awards.  Applications for the Fall 2025 school year scholarship program will be accepted starting January 2025 and will close May 1, 2025.

A career in radio broadcasting is fun, challenging, and provides the foundation for a lifetime of community involvement. Radio is alive and growing despite the introduction of digitally delivered audio.  In Lane County over 250,000 adults listen on average 14 hours a week to free, over-the-air radio.

Eugene Area Radio Stations – EARS - is a 501(6)(C) non-profit trade association comprised of 16 commercial and public radio stations in the Eugene/Springfield/Cottage Grove/Junction City market area.  Its scholarship program has awarded over $100,000 to qualifying students over the past decade. Many of the past recipients have active careers in radio broadcasting.
